TMC: Courage, Honesty & Care
The three words that define us
We are often shown and told what the values of an organisation are, but not necessarily the background to them or why they are important to that business.
My name is Tim, and I am the Managing Director and founder of TMC. I thought I would take this as an opportunity to share something that is very important to us all at TMC, personally for me and potentially you too.
TMC is an agency that encourages, supports, and upholds the values of Courage, Honesty and Care.
Our values have an impact on everything we do at TMC, on the way we behave and our communication
Our values tell our story
We are an agency that celebrates our values through our behaviours. The way we show up, engage with each other, our clients, and the communities we serve. Our values define us, they tell a story; our story and they are at the core of everything we do.
By showing courage, we produce better work, we are honest with each other so we can be open to challenge, to create a stronger learning environment. Our intent is to leave a positive social legacy through the work we do. This means that we must care about what we do and why we do it. Not just for the work, or our clients, but for ourselves.
Recently we have been reflecting on our values. One outcome from one of these sessions was that our values bought a renewed clarity to our mission and vision. Since then, we have redefined our vision and mission which have now become far more ambitious than we could ever initially imagine.
The big question is: What do our values, that have had the power to bring clarity to our vision, really mean to us?
Courage in our organisation
Courage is in the way we turn up. It comes with a responsibility to do the right thing at the right time. It’s important we show empathy and actively support one another, no matter what is thrown at us. We are a team.
It is also our duty to ensure that everyone in our team has a voice, so that they can express their true feelings and ideas. We encourage everyone to show their passion in the work they do and the lives they lead.
When we push ideas and give our clients choice, great things happen. Our ideas are based upon experience, knowledge, and the belief in doing the right thing. This gives our team and our clients the courage to deliver projects with impact.
Honesty builds trust in our company
Honesty builds trust, it also builds respect, both of which are immensely valuable to our organisation. We know what we know but we also have the courage and honesty to say when we don’t.
We use this as a self-check. Sometimes we all need to take a moment. I personally encourage this, the last thing any one of us wants to do is react. If we can firstly consider and then apply understanding to our response, our honesty allows us a moment to be sure of who we are and what we are doing. It directly affects the quality of our relationships.
Fundamentally this approach allows TMC to deliver work and communicate with positive intent. Ultimately, we are trusted advisors and a critical friend to our colleagues and our clients.
Care, the most important value our organisation can show
We have a care that is active and present. We practice it and talk about it. We exhibit it in our behaviours, and it’s how we connect with our colleagues and clients.
Our version of care is led by empathy and compassion. It comes with great responsibility.
Care should always be delivered personally. It has huge impact, even with the simplest acts of kindness. It might just be a gesture, a tone, a pause, if you genuinely care, your audience will know!
I believe care should be active and present in all organisations as it is in TMC. Care is about us, you, every person.
Our values are stronger together
The combination of our values creates a strength and guide that has been at the core of our success. Together they are greater than the sum of their individual parts.
Leading with our values will be how we will continue to grow. TMC aims to leave a lasting and positive social impact.
